Bavaria BierHaus, in the Financial District is a great place to warm up this winter. The German food, German beer, and a very German atmosphere will draw you in, keep you comfortable, and able to combat any winter blues thrown your way.
Erdinger, a German Beer recently held a pairing dinner to showcase the versatility of their beers with the traditional and modern German cuisine. Erdinger was one beer, when I studying in Germany that I absolutely fell in love with, so I was excited to see some fun pairings.
Erdinger Hefeweizen is the lightest of the beers and has notes of orange, banana, and citrus peel. There is some spice on the palate, but the smooth, creaminess completely balances it out. Paired were the Pork Belly Waffle Sliders with Smoked Cheddar, Spicy Mayo, and Krautsalat. Pork belly and beer in any way, shape, or form are just a match made in heaven, so this certainly wowed the crowd.
The Erdinger Urweisse was up next and paired with “Shrimp & Dumplings”, which consisted of Shrimp, Herbed Spätzle, Sweet Potato, and Lobster Velouté. This pairing was fun and a little daring, but in a delectable way. The Spätzle was creamy and the textural layers to the dish really made this second course pop.
Rainbow Trout “a la Plancha” paired with the Erdinger FestweiBe was where things got a little more “fusion” not so much modern Germany. This pairing was still very delicious, and was served with some German favorites like cider braised sauerkraut, smoked bacon, and lemon.
Then chef threw one of my favorite dishes our way: Pork Schnitzel! He went a little “ranch” on this dish, but it was awesome and I ate every last bite. Topped with arugula, pickled shallots, and butternut squash, this dish was warm and delectable for winter, and paired with the Erdinger Dunkel, a nice dark beer.
And for dessert, because us German’s love our sweets too; Caramel Apple Strudel with Maple Walnut Ice Cream and Cider Caramel hit the table. Paired was a fun dessert beer, the Erdinger Pikantus. This one was a fun way to end a delicious dinner and evening.
Be sure to warm up this winter at Bavaria Bier Haus for some great beer, cuisine, and bar bites!
