I had the pleasure of visiting Chianti Classico in Tuscany last year and it was a wine region experience I will never forget. Between the food, wine, and beautiful sights, there is nothing like it! Fast forward a few months and I was “back in Tuscany” again, except in NYC at Il Gattopardo with Lamberto Frescobaldi, of Frescobaldi Toscana! We tasted the new vintages of one of his brand new estates: Tenuta Perano, which was quite lovely.

Lamberto Frescobaldi is one of the most well-known winemakers and important to the industry. This is one of the oldest winemaking families in the world, in which he is the 30th generation! I had the exciting opportunity to meet Lamberto himself for lunch while he was visiting NYC and it was absolutely wonderful; both the wine and the company. They were looking to expand the property and make more wines with the diversity and beauty of Tuscany. They had their eye on this vineyard for a long time, and when it came up for sale, they bought it.

Tenuta Perano estate is located in the heart of Chianti Classico, in Gaiole.  The property possesses excellent climate and soil and the vineyards are located 500 meters above sea level. The vineyards have a perfect position that captures heat and sunlight, which allows for great ripening of the grapes. All in all, this makes for great wines with full body, fruit, and tannin structure. This property he said wouldn’t just make “good Chianti” he wanted to make “spectacular Chianti” and that’s why he needed the Tenuta Perano property!

The vintage we tasted of both the Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva was 2015. This particular vintage was ideal with a mild spring, hot summer, and cool evenings in the fall. Overall this made 2015 very desirable, and I was so happy we were able to taste the two wines at lunch paired with incredible Italian fare.

We started off with a Farro Salad with grilled zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, arugula, and smoked mozzarella cheese. It was a delectable chilled salad that went beautifully with the Tenuta Perano Frescobaldi 2015 Chianti Classico! This wine is soft with nice blackberry, cherry, and black fruit flavors. On the palate, it’s complex with smooth tannins and a lot of layers. Some nice spice comes through on the finish, which is alluring and delicious. When paired with the chilled farro salad, the smoked mozzarella really helped the spice notes come out in the wine, while the grilled vegetables went beautifully with the dark fruit flavors in the wine. This would be an ideal pairing for a summer get together with friends!

After came the 2015 Riserva, which comes from high elevation vineyards and is very elegant. It’s a powerful wine, with fruit hand selected, which is then aged in Slovenian oak for 24 months. The wine is made of mainly Sangiovese and a small amount of Merlot. It shows violet aromas with a black fruit forward nose and a nice spice finish. It went beautifully with the Filet, roasted potatoes, and spinach we were served. Some other’s enjoyed a delicious mushroom ragu over house-made pasta as well, which equally paired with this fine wine.

For those looking for Chianti Classico and want to taste from one of the most famous winemaking families, I absolutely recommend Frescobaldi Tenuta Perano. Both 2015 releases are exceptional, each in their own way and would pair beautifully with outdoor grilling, fireside with friends, or even on a spring picnic with some cheese and charcuterie.

Always remember, eat what you like and drink what you love!
