Don’t be afraid to break out the sweeter wines this winter! Dessert wines make wonderful cheese, meat, and dessert pairings and are a great gift. This Valentines Day, do something different and plan a romantic night in, while you pair your sweetheart with one of these sensational sweet Sauternes!
What is a Sauternes?– These sweet wines are from the Graves area in Bordeaux, France. Known for their pair-ability with foie gras, blue cheese, and chocolate, these wines are wonderful. Sauternes is produced using Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle grapes, that are affected by noble rot (botrytis). The noble rot causes the grapes to become partially raisined making these wines very concentrated.
Sweet wines, especially Sauternes should not be feared, and in fact should be embraced. This time of year, nothing’s better than curling up on a cold night by a fire with the one you love, and enjoying one of these delicious wines. Below are three Sauternes that are pair-able, approachable, and perfect to sip this Valentines Day!
Chateau Doisy-Védrines 2012: Vibrant and sweet with freshness and finesse. This medium bodied wine shows some floral aromas along with honey and stone fruit notes. Pair this with some dark chocolate mousse or chocolate covered strawberries. $44
