Some wineries produce exceptional wine. Others capture the spirit of a place. High in the hills of Chianti Classico, Montefili is one of those rare estates where history, terroir, and thoughtful stewardship converge to create wines that speak clearly of their origin. Perched between 480 and 550 meters above sea level, Montefili has become one of Tuscany’s most respected fine wine estates, crafting elegant expressions of Sangiovese that reflect both the beauty of the land and the people who care for it.

Long before vineyards covered these slopes, Montefili held significance for the civilizations that came before it. The hill has roots stretching back to Etruscan and Roman times, later becoming connected to the Benedictine monks of Badia a Passignano in 986 AD. For centuries, this landscape served as both a place of passage and permanence, shaped by generations who understood the value of working alongside nature rather than against it.

Montefili’s modern story began in the 1970s when the Acuti family planted the estate’s first contemporary vineyards. During the rise of the Super Tuscan movement, Montefili embraced innovation while remaining deeply committed to Sangiovese, Tuscany’s most iconic grape variety.

In 2015, a new chapter began under the stewardship of Nicola Marzovilla, Frank Bynum, and Tom Peck Jr. Together with winemaker and agronomist Serena Gusmeri, they have helped elevate Montefili into one of Tuscany’s most compelling boutique estates, producing wines that honor both tradition and place.

Montefili encompasses just 12.5 hectares of vineyards, planted primarily to Sangiovese. Some vines date back to 1975, their deep roots drawing complexity and character from the soils below. The estate’s vineyards sit between 480 and 550 meters above sea level, where significant day-to-night temperature shifts encourage slow ripening and preserve freshness. This altitude is one of Montefili’s defining characteristics, allowing Sangiovese to develop both concentration and elegance.

The soils are equally important. Galestro and alberese, classic formations found throughout the finest sites of Chianti Classico, provide excellent drainage and contribute to the structure, minerality, and longevity found in the wines.

The result is Sangiovese with remarkable precision, vibrant acidity, and an unmistakable sense of place. At Montefili, sustainability is more than a certification. It is a philosophy. Each vineyard parcel is farmed individually, recognizing that every site possesses its own rhythm, exposure, and personality. Cover crops encourage biodiversity, compost enriches the soil naturally, and every decision is made with future generations in mind.

The vineyards function as a living ecosystem where insects, flowers, wildlife, and microorganisms all play a role in maintaining balance. As the Montefili team states: “We only put on the vines what we’d want in our glass.” That simple statement perfectly captures the estate’s commitment to authenticity and stewardship. At the heart of Montefili’s success is Serena Gusmeri, who serves as both winemaker and agronomist. After gaining experience throughout Italy and Australia, Gusmeri developed a philosophy rooted in observation, patience, and restraint. Her focus begins in the vineyard, where healthy soils and balanced vines create the foundation for exceptional wines.

Rather than imposing a style in the cellar, she allows each vineyard to express itself naturally. The goal is not to make wine that tastes like a winemaker’s hand, but rather wine that tastes unmistakably of Montefili.

Tasting Montefili: Three Expressions of Sangiovese

One of the most fascinating aspects of tasting at Montefili is seeing how a single grape variety can tell multiple stories depending on vineyard location, altitude, vine age, and soil composition.

Chianti Classico Riserva: Montefili’s Chianti Classico serves as the gateway into the estate’s philosophy. Produced entirely from Sangiovese grown on clay and silt soils from vineyards planted in the late 1990s, the wine is aged for 15 months in large oak barrels before spending an additional 9 months in bottle.

The result is fresh and inviting, offering notes of red cherry, wild berries, dried herbs, and subtle spice. The tannins are polished and integrated, while the acidity provides lift and energy. It is approachable yet unmistakably serious, showcasing the elegance and balance that define Montefili’s style.

Vinea nel Bosco: Vinea nel Bosco offers a distinctly different expression of Sangiovese. Named for the small wooded area that surrounds the vineyard, this wine originates from Montefili’s highest site, approximately 1,750 feet above sea level. The combination of altitude, alberese, limestone, and marl soils creates a unique microclimate rarely found within Chianti Classico.

Aged for 26 months in large oak barrels and at least 12 months in bottle, Vinea nel Bosco is refined and nuanced. Floral aromas intertwine with red fruits, savory herbs, and mineral notes. There is a delicacy to the wine that makes it incredibly compelling, proving that power is not always necessary to achieve complexity.

Anfiteatro: If Vinea nel Bosco showcases elegance, Anfiteatro represents the soul of Montefili. This iconic single-vineyard Sangiovese comes from the estate’s oldest vineyard, planted in 1975. Named for the amphitheater-like shape of the site, Anfiteatro reflects the very heart of the estate. Galestro and quartz-rich soils, old vines, and an extended 28-month aging period create a wine of extraordinary depth and character. Layers of dark cherry, dried rose petals, tobacco, earth, and spice unfold gradually across the palate.

Despite its concentration, what makes Anfiteatro truly remarkable is its balance. Freshness, structure, texture, and elegance work in harmony, leading to a finish that lingers long after the final sip. It is a wine that invites contemplation and rewards patience.

Together, these three wines demonstrate the beauty of Montefili’s philosophy. Rather than pursuing a uniform house style, the estate allows each vineyard to reveal its own identity.

The Chianti Classico offers classic regional character and accessibility. Vinea nel Bosco highlights altitude, finesse, and nuance. Anfiteatro delivers depth, history, and the profound complexity that can emerge from old vines rooted in exceptional terroir.

In an era when many wines strive for power or perfection, Montefili offers something more meaningful: authenticity.

Every bottle begins with a hillside. At Montefili, that hillside has been telling its story for more than a thousand years, and with each vintage, the story continues.
