IMG_4613Spice Market in the Meat Packing district just celebrated their 10th year anniversary! To celebrate this iconic restaurant, recipes by Marja Vongerichten, K.F. Seetoh and more, created a 10 Course Tasting menu with wine pairings. The menu at spice market itself is unbelievable, and you can have a lunch or dinner tasting anytime you go in, but this Somm went in for the 10 courses to celebrate 10 years of fabulous fare!

The Yellow Fin Tuna with Tempura Pearls and IMG_4624Lemon Szechuan Mayonnaise was the perfect way to kick off the meal. This spicy dish wakes up your taste buds and preps you for a long and delicious journey. Alongside the Tuna was the Crispy Grain Salad with Tamarind Vinaigrette, which was packed with flavor, texture, and some slight spice. We paired this with a Cava, slightly underestimating the spiciness of the dishes, but all in all it was a very pleasant pairing!


Next came the Beef Skewers and Shrimp Dumplings. The beef was perfectly cooked, slightly spicy, and absolutely delicious with the Cava, as it cut right through the spice. The dumplings were with a Sweet & Sour Plum sauce that was out of this world yum!

IMG_4645  The BBQ Atlantic Salmon with Cucumber and Mint gracefully made its way to the table and was accompanied by grilled Asparagus. The salmon was perfectly cooked, moist, and full of wonderful flavor. The asparagus was honestly the best I have ever had and I recommend ordering extra of this delectable side dish. IMG_4648

Korean Short Ribs with Shiso, Sesame, and Kimchi Fried Rice came to the table shortly after.

This dish is outstanding! The short ribs are sweet, tangy, and fall apart just the way a perfectly cooked short rib should. The rice is spicy and packed with chunks of kimchi and is absolutely stunning. 

IMG_4647This was paired with the 2011 Tensley Syrah from California. This wine complimented the sweet and savory notes in the meat and completely complimented the spicy rice!

And of course, chef made sure we still had room for our grand finale! Ovaltine Kulfi: Caramelized Banana with Spiced Milk Chocolate Sauce, and Coconut Calamansi Cream Puffs were placed on the table and paired with a Rose Regale Brachetto from Banfi! As a surprise from chef, we were also given the Banana Cake Baked Alaska with Avocado Lime Sorbet and Blood Orange Chili Sorbet! Needless to say, the brachetto and these desserts made for two perfect pairings!

For those of you who didn’t make it into spice market this March, have no fear. Chef is redesigning the tasting menus and adding even more delectable options. Be sure to dine at Spice Market and celebrate a wonderful 10 years with them.
