Benziger is known for three things: family, healthy vines, and great wines! They have been producing wines in Sonoma for thirty years, and also have implemented Biodynamic farming methods into their vineyards. This is why their wines are of high quality and just stunning! They appreciate the land and understand what it takes to have healthy vineyards without having to use harsh chemicals or additives.

I had the pleasure of tasting some incredible wines from the portfolio on a zoom session last month! The wine media world has really changed, where before we were meeting with winemakers and vineyard managers, and tasting their wines in person. When I wasn’t tasting wine in NYC I was traveling, to taste with wineries, and once COVID happened, it all came to a standstill. Luckily for wine media, the wine industry took to zoom immediately and I have been able to taste and virtually meet some fantastic people!

We began the tasting with the Benziger 2018 Reserve Chardonnay. This wine is organic and from the Carneros region of Sonoma. It’s bright and refreshing with green fruit, some oak, and nice spice. On the palate, it’s full and delicious with nice citrus and minerality! This is a really wonderful wine you can order online for $33.

After the chardonnay, we moved to the reds! During this time I did have COVID and was recovering, so I couldn’t fully taste the reds. Luckily I have a Coravin and waited weeks later once my taste and smell were back, to re-visit the reds again. I really enjoyed the Benziger 2016 de Coelo Quintus Pinot Noir. This Biodynamic wine is just luscious with striking red fruit, strawberry jam, and nice spice. On the palate, it’s a fruity Pinot with a ton of personality and nice floral notes which reminded me of violets. Overall this is a really fantastic wine for $69.

Up third was the Benziger 2016 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon, which is Certified Sustainable. It’s elegant and juicy with tons of dark berries, mocha, and spice. It’s a layered wine that can easily be enjoyed any day of the week for $20. We decided to compare Cabernet to Cabernet, even though they are both from very different vineyards, sometimes it’s nice to try two of the same grape varietal by the same winery, in different vineyards. The last wine of the tasting was just wonderful! Benziger 2016 Estate Sunny Slope Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This Biodynamic wine expresses cherry, chocolate, and tobacco notes with smooth tannins, and a wonderful finish. It’s a big wine, with a lot to offer and layers of complexity, spice, and dark fruit. Overall this wine is ideal for $50!

If you’re seeking some wines to taste from Sonoma, absolutely check out some of the Benziger portfolios! Many I am sure, have had their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, but if you are looking for more, they have a wonderful selection of wines and grape varietals!

Always remember, eat what you like and drink what you love. Please pair responsibly.
