There are some wineries that make an impression, and then there are wineries like Iron Horse Vineyards that stay with you forever. I first tasted these wines years ago when I was managing a restaurant, and they immediately stood out. Fast forward to now, revisiting them felt like running into an old friend who somehow looks even better than you remember. The quality, the elegance, and the craftsmanship? Still jaw-dropping.

The Story Behind the Sparkle

Iron Horse Vineyards was founded in 1976 by Audrey and Barry Sterling, who fell in love with a little piece of western Sonoma County that everyone else thought was too cool for grapes. Luckily, they had vision (and good taste). The name comes from an old railroad stop on the property, but the wines are anything but old-fashioned.

Sitting in the fog-kissed Green Valley of the Russian River Valley, the estate is planted to nothing but Chardonnay and Pinot Noir—exactly what this terroir was meant for. They craft everything estate-grown and bottled, block by block, and their sparkling wines have been poured at the White House since 1985. This is Champagne-style winemaking with a California soul.

The Wines & My Pairings

2021 Russian River Cuvée
This bubbly opens with bright lemon meringue and a whisper of fresh brioche. On the palate, it’s lively and layered—blood orange peel, spiced poached pear, and a finish that lingers just long enough to make you crave another sip. I paired it with Light Hill Meats soft shell crab and breaded veal, and it was one of those chef’s kiss moments. The citrusy zip cut through the crab’s sweetness beautifully, while the richer notes played perfectly with the veal.

Wedding Cuvée
Pale salmon in the glass with a lively mousse, this wine sings with raspberry, strawberry, and just a twist of lemon zest. It glides into red apple and a creamy mid-palate, finishing with a refreshing grapefruit lift. I enjoyed it one evening with a cigar and some cheeses—an indulgent combo that worked because the wine’s freshness kept the richness in check, while those red fruits made every bite of cheese pop.

2020 Winery Block Pinot Noir
Seductive is the only word that works here. Soft and silky, but with depth and presence, this Pinot was berry-forward with balanced spice from start to finish. Think black cherry, raspberry, a touch of plum, and just the right amount of oak. Honestly, it’s been a while since a Pinot stopped me in my tracks like this one did. It’s graceful yet powerful—a wine that makes you slow down and savor.

Why Iron Horse Deserves a Spot in Your Cellar (or Gift Bag)

Up Next… Chardonnay

I still have their Chardonnay to taste, and if these wines are any indication, I’m in for something spectacular. Stay tuned—I’ll be sharing that soon.

Until then, if you’re looking for wines that sparkle in the glass and on the palate, Iron Horse Vineyards is a name you’ll want to remember.
