Recently, I embarked on a media trip to Versailles, KY, nestled in Woodford County, and let me tell you—it was an absolute delight! This charming destination is just a short road trip from Tennessee, and if you prefer to fly, you’ll be in Lexington in no time. The moment you arrive, you’re greeted by the rolling hills, stunning farms, and quaint homes that give this area its unique small-town charm.
Versailles is in the heart of horse country, home to legendary Kentucky Derby winners like American Pharoah and Justify. One of the most memorable stops on this trip was Coolmore Farms, where these majestic racehorses live a life of luxury. It was a surreal experience seeing them up close, knowing their incredible legacies.
Of course, when you’re in Kentucky, bourbon is always on the itinerary. And we had the pleasure of experiencing southern culinary staples like Kentucky Benedictine Spread, Keeneland’s famous Bread Pudding, and Hot Browns. But it wasn’t just about the food and bourbon—it was also about the people. We spent much of our time with Jerry from Stone Fences Tours, an expert in all things bourbon, food, and history. Jerry’s vibrant personality, sharp wit, and extensive knowledge made our tour unforgettable. If you visit, I highly recommend booking a day with him to dive into the local flavors and stories.
Our first evening took us to A Storybook Inn, a picturesque bed and breakfast that lives up to its name in every way. My room, aptly called “My Fair Lady,” felt like stepping into a timeless tale. Elise, the innkeeper, greets every guest with freshly baked cookies (which she changes daily!) and offers a breakfast experience like no other. From the beautifully printed menus to the multi-course breakfast, every detail is meticulously crafted, and it’s clear that hosting is her passion.
For a bit of adventure, we tried out Rail Explorers, and it was more fun than I ever expected. Pedaling along old railroad tracks, we soaked in the breathtaking Kentucky landscape, passing through charming local neighborhoods and peaceful farms. It was a workout, but also relaxing in a way that made those fried pickles at Riccardo’s pub later that evening taste even better!
Bourbon lovers, take note: a visit to Castle & Key Distillery and Woodford Reserve is a must. Each offers a distinct experience, but both are quintessential Kentucky. At Castle & Key, you’ll find a lifestyle experience with tours, beautifully maintained grounds, and exceptional cocktails. Meanwhile, Woodford Reserve is more traditional, steeped in history, with an Old World feel and a tasting room that’s simply breathtaking.
Another highlight of our trip was Grey Ridge Farm, where we got an insider’s look at the world of competitive horse training. The horses were absolutely gorgeous, and the team’s passion for their work shone through in every interaction. We even made another exclusive stop at Coolmore America Farm to visit American Pharoah and Justify—talk about living legends!
For dining, downtown Versailles has a gem in Vallozzi’s, an Italian-inspired restaurant that perfectly blends farm-to-table freshness with Southern flair. The Arancini and house-made pasta were standout dishes, and their cocktails, like the Woodford Reserve Paper Plane, were the perfect complement.
We wrapped up our trip with a stay at the iconic Kentucky Castle—and let’s just say it’s as magical as it sounds. This gorgeous hotel has a rich history (which I’ll share more about in a future post), and it’s surrounded by lush gardens and a farm filled with goats, llamas, horses, and more. Their farm-to-table restaurant is a culinary treat, with seasonal dishes and a fantastic cocktail bar. The Espresso Martini is a must-try, but don’t be afraid to let the mixologists surprise you.
Whether you’re planning a wedding, corporate event, or just need a getaway, Versailles has it all. The rich history, the warm hospitality, and the incredible sights make this small town an unforgettable destination. So, if you’re looking for a unique trip that combines adventure, food, and world-class bourbon, look no further than Versailles, Kentucky!
Stay tuned for part 2 and some deeper dives into each of these amazing stops and other delectable ones coming this October… You won’t want to miss it!
