Ever think about pairing a cigar with a bottle of rosé? Well, it’s quite a daring pairing, and as long as you match the flavors appropriately, you’ll be in great shape. I recently enjoyed a beautiful bottle of 2016 Planeta Rosé from Sicily. This wine is fresh and fruity, and when paired with The Chef’s Edition cigar by Davidoff of Geneva , it was a one of a kind pairing.

Yes… my Shih Tzu Cali totally photobombed my picture!
Planeta Rosé is made from 50% Nero d’Avola and 50% Syrah grapes. This wine is a journey through Sicily and is great as an aperitif or with seafood, fresh grilled vegetables, and tapas. The color of this wine is what I first noticed (besides the beautiful label). It’s soft pink with bright pink highlights, and expresses aromas of strawberry, pomegranate, and tropical fruits. It is dry with a smooth palate and well balanced acidity.
The Davidoff Chef’s Edition is made to pair with an evening of fine dining and the brand absolutely accomplished that. This cigar is luxurious, medium body, and full of flavors such as roasted nuts and subtle hints of spice. It has a creaminess and a natural tobacco sweetness as well.
This pairing in particular worked well, and when choosing this pairing, I envisioned being outside, enjoying the warm spring sun with my mom (who also smokes cigars) and wanted a fruit forward, smooth and balanced rosé. The wines tropical fruit notes and strawberry flavors compliment the nuttiness in the cigar, and the balanced acidity pairs well with the creaminess of the cigar; overall, it’s a great pairing.
Please pair responsibly!
