I recently had the extreme pleasure of tasting three gorgeous whites that completely blew me away! Öömrang, named the 2023 Winery of the Year, masterfully blends deep-rooted German heritage with Washington State’s unique climate to craft exquisite, rare German white wines and European-style spirits. Their vineyards are nurtured by generations of family vintners and cutting-edge cultivation techniques that produce exceptional flavors in every bottle. I fell in love when I first tried the Siegerrebe which is a blend of Gewürztraminer and Madeleine Angevine grapes. This intrigued me so much and when I tried that first crisp sip… I was hooked and knew this winery was onto something because I could drink a full case over time; easily!
You can experience the distinctive taste of tradition and innovation with Öömrang’s limited production wines. As mentioned above the Estate Siegerrebe was exceptional with notes of apricot, grapefruit, lemon, and hints of flowers. On the palate it’s dry and juicy and my friend who tried it with me is normally a Pinot Grigio drinker and she fell in love with its dry yet fruity style. This wine has perfect balance and is ideal for this summer weather we’ve been having! Pairing wise, I would choose a Peach Caprese Salad, Seafood, or maybe a nice farm fresh salad with plenty of berries, seeds, and a light dressing. The wine is so sensational it’ll make your dishes POP!
I also tried the Estate Sylvaner which was fresh and light with florals, citrus, and even some freshly cut grass. It’s such a pleasant wine on the nose with a freshness that’s absolutely addicting. This wine is ideal for summer because of the fresh fruit and vibrant palate but can easily transition with you into fall (so best to buy a few). If you’re thinking pairings, some Grilled Oysters with Spinach and Bacon and Butter would be amazing with this wine as well as even ethnic cuisine such as mild Thai dishes and or some good ol’ grilled foods. This wine really takes well to many flavors, and is nice and playful so pairing this one should be fun and stress free.
Then there is the Estate Müller-Thurgau which is nice and aromatic. If you love to dig your nose into a wine and really get a “sense of place”, this is the wine to do so with! Nice grapefruit, lemon, lime and elegance hit you right at the beginning followed by a tart yet lively and refreshing palate. There is a peachiness in the finish and great acidity so this can easily stand up to food such as Fish Tacos, Grilled Shrimp, Buratta Salad with Cherries and Corn, and so many more dishes!
These wines were surprising and delightful and if you enjoy whites, they’re worth it! They also have many more options such as a sparkling as well as soon to come some reds! Explore their award-winning collection, including these unique white wines, European-style eau de vie, and soon-to-be-released red wines which I mentioned. Each product showcases their unwavering commitment to quality and craftsmanship and you will not be disappointed one bit!
Always remember, eat what you like and drink what you love. Please pair responsibly!
